Apple Intelligence — AI Comes to iPhone
Apple has officially launched Apple Intelligence, its comprehensive AI platform for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Unlike cloud-dependent AI assistants, Apple Intelligence runs the majority of its AI models directly on device, prioritizing user privacy while delivering practical AI features integrated throughout iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
On-Device AI — Privacy by Default
Apple’s approach to AI is architecturally different from OpenAI and Google. The core Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device using Apple Silicon neural engines, meaning user data never leaves the iPhone or Mac. For more complex requests requiring larger models, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute — a system Apple describes as offering “unprecedented” privacy guarantees for cloud AI processing.
Writing Tools Across All Apps
Apple Intelligence adds AI writing capabilities to every app on iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. Users can rewrite, proofread, or summarize any text with a tap, across Mail, Messages, Pages, Notes, and third-party apps. The writing tools adapt to context — more formal in business emails, more casual in messages — without requiring users to learn prompting techniques.
Image Playground and Genmoji
Image Playground allows users to generate images in Animation, Illustration, or Sketch styles from text descriptions. Genmoji lets users create custom emoji characters from text descriptions or even from photos of people in their contacts. Both features run on-device and are integrated into Messages and other system apps.
Siri with ChatGPT Integration
The redesigned Siri features deeper system integration and contextual awareness across apps. For requests beyond its on-device capabilities, Siri can now route queries to ChatGPT with user permission — with Apple emphasizing that requests forwarded to ChatGPT are not logged by OpenAI and IP addresses are obscured.
Device Compatibility and Rollout
Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 (all models), iPad with M1 chip or later, or Mac with M1 chip or later. The feature launched in English first with additional languages following in subsequent updates. Apple has committed to expanding language support to include Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
