Midjourney V6.1 — What’s New
Midjourney has released V6.1, a significant update to its flagship image generation model. The new version delivers improvements across image quality, coherence, text rendering, and prompt accuracy that Midjourney says represent its largest quality jump since the V6 release.
Dramatically Improved Image Quality
V6.1 produces noticeably sharper, more detailed images with better lighting and more coherent compositions than V6. Fine details such as fabric textures, hair, skin, and architectural elements are rendered with greater accuracy. The model also handles complex scenes with multiple subjects more reliably without the distortions that occasionally appeared in V6.
Text Rendering Finally Works
One of the most significant improvements in V6.1 is text rendering. While Midjourney has historically struggled with accurate text in images, V6.1 makes readable text generation reliable for the first time. Signs, labels, logos, and typographic elements render with much higher accuracy, opening up new use cases for marketing and design professionals.
Improved Hands and Faces
Hands and faces — traditionally the hardest elements for AI image generators to render correctly — have improved substantially in V6.1. The model produces anatomically correct hands in most scenarios and renders facial expressions with greater nuance and realism. This makes V6.1 significantly more suitable for portrait and character-focused work.
Faster Generation
Despite the quality improvements, V6.1 generates images faster than V6, reducing average generation time by approximately 25%. This is particularly beneficial for users on subscription plans with limited fast GPU minutes, as they can generate more images within their allocation.
Accessing V6.1
V6.1 is available to all Midjourney subscribers via the web interface and Discord. It is now the default model for new generations. Users can also specify it explicitly with --v 6.1 in their prompts. Midjourney plans to continue iterating on V6.1 with additional improvements before releasing V7.
